ACO Stratford-Perth County

In 2025, the Branch added three notable properties to its Watchlist: the Stratford Normal School, the Queen’s Inn, and a historic industrial site in St. Marys featuring six concrete pillars. Each site reflects important aspects of the region’s architectural and cultural history. Branch President Dan Schneider advocated for the preservation of the St. Marys site through public engagement and Council attendance. The Branch continues to monitor these properties and advocate for their protection.

The Branch supported the reopening of Here For Now Theatre in the former Perth County Registry Office. Representatives attended the May grand opening, where a historical plaque gifted by the Branch was unveiled. A $2,500 contribution in 2024 helped support restoration efforts. The project highlights the value of preserving heritage through adaptive reuse.

Branch members remained active at the provincial level, attending the Ontario Heritage Conference and participating in discussions around the ACO “Re-Imagined” initiative. Meetings in Guelph and Waterloo explored new organizational models for the future of the ACO. These opportunities allowed the Branch to stay informed and contribute to broader conversations. Provincial engagement continues to strengthen local work.

In October 2025, the Branch voted in principle to pursue affiliate not-for-profit status. A transition team was formed to guide this process and explore future directions. This work reflects a commitment to long-term sustainability and strong governance. Strategic planning remains a key focus moving forward.

The Branch held its Annual General Meeting on June 4, welcoming two newly elected executive members. A guest lecture on The Ontario Cottage highlighted local architectural heritage, with book copies donated to area schools. Members also participated in a community session on the Grand Trunk renewal project. These events continue to build awareness and community connection.

The Historical Plaques Program reached 436 installations by the end of 2025, marking a major milestone. The Branch is also exploring a documentary partnership focused on architectural preservation. In addition, the website has been refreshed. These efforts support greater visibility and community engagement.
