William McCabe-Traveller
46 Waterloo Street

The yellow brick house at 46 Waterloo Street North was built in September of 1906 by the builder, Thomas Smith. William McCabe moved into the house in 1907 as listed in the Veron City Directory.

William was born to parents John McCabe (1838-?) and Bessie

McKay (1841-?) in Zorra West, Oxford County on March 26, 1872.


William was the oldest child, followed by a sister, Isabella, born April 3, 1876, and Elizabeth, born April 27, 1877. In the 1901 Census, William is living and working on the family farm as a farmhand.

On November 25, 1905, he married Margaret Elizabeth Acton in Chesley, Bruce County. Margaret was born on May 11, 1877, in Chesley, Ontario to parents Joseph Acton (1840-1925) and Ann McNabb (1827-1891). Their first child, William Stanford, was born on February 5, 1907, followed by Verna Elizabeth, February 24, 1909, both were born in Stratford. In the 1911 Veron Stratford city directory William's occupation is listed as a traveller (salesman). 1912 was the last year the family was listed living in Stratford. They moved to York South (Toronto) Ontario, another daughter named Olive Acton was born on December 12, 1913, in Toronto, followed by Della Edna on June 13, 1916.

According to the 1921 Census, William's occupation was a meat inspector at that time. William and Margaret continued to live in Toronto, Ontario.


Their son, William Standford, married Dorothy May Chidlow, born August 24, 1907, in Montreal, where she was born, on August 27, 1927. The couple moved to Grove City, Ohio. A year later, son, William Stewart was born on April 16. The family moved to Baltimore, Maryland by the time, William enlisted on October 16, 1940, with the United States to fight in World War l l . Their son, William Stewart, Sargent United States Airforce, died in October 1956. Dorthy died on October 17, 1989, and William Stanford on May 21, 1914. All are buried in Mount Olive Cemetery in Baltimore.

Verna married William Charlton Connor on March 13, 1938, in York, Ontario. They didn't have any children.


Verna died on December 3, 1977, and was buried in Prospect Cemetery, Toronto. Olive married Alec John Lewis on April 18, 1936, in York. They also had no children. Olive died in 1983 in Jackson Point, Ontario. Della, married Arthur Mason in Toronto. No record of her death could be located.

William and Margaret continued to live in the same house in Toronto until he died on June 26, 1944. Margaret died on April 12, 1960. Both are buried alongside their daughter, Verna, in Prospect Cemetery in Toronto.
